  • Bare root plants are sold without any soil or pots. They are grown in our fields and dug for harvest while the plants are dormant, and the ground is not frozen (mid-late fall and early-mid spring). For more information on the care of bare root plants and the benefits of bare root vs container stock please read on (Links)

  • ¨     A native plant is generally one that is considered indigenous to a particular locality or region.  Here in the Northeast, we consider plants to be native to an area if we have reason to believe they were naturally occurring there prior to European colonization. Native plants tend to be highly adapted to the specific abiotic (climate, soil types/chemistry, water regimes, etc.), and biotic (living) components of their environment, having co-evolved with many of their microbial, fungal, plant, and animal neighbors for many millennia. Some of these interspecies relationships can be highly complex (involving many tiers of organisms) and/or highly specific (involving obligatory mutualism).

We try to propagate from locally native plants (ecotypes), when possible, because they often have unique characteristics (compared to individuals of the same species from other ecoregions) that allow them to thrive in our local ecosystems.  Using local /regional ecotypes also increases the chances of successful establishment and genetic compatibility with wild plants in the area.

  • We do not offer a plant guarantee which is reflected in our lower prices per stem. Our underlying goal is to plant and distribute more native species, so if your plants are not thriving please contact us and we will work with you to ensure success!
